Lady Sirse at http://tentonhammer.com had a chance to sit down with Darrin “Talisker” McPherson, Sigil Games Online’s Senior Game Designer, and chat with him about two of the unique classes in Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. Darrin revealed information about the 'Disciple' and 'Dread Knight' classes, and both of them sound very original (Ok so the ideas aren't completely new, but they're more original/less-used than the generic 'Warrior', 'Mage', and 'Theif' classes).
The Disciple is a class that seems to be based on the eastern philosophy Tai Chi. Darrin describes the Disciple as a class that uses internal and external energy in order to effect his allies and enemies. He forms 'bonds' with them which he uses to do certain things depending on the stance (offensive or defensive) that he takes. For example, the Disciple can use his bond with an ally and a defensive stance to share his chi and heal him/her, or use a bond with an enemy and on offensive stance to debuff it. The description was a little lacking in certain details (such as the number of stances that the Disciple may have), but that was the general point he was trying to make.
The Dread Knight was the other class that Darrin talked about. Though the name makes the class sound evil, Darrin dispels those connotations. He described the Dread Knight as a class that does what needs to be done in order to finish the job, comparing it to Batman and The Punisher. If you were a Dungeons and Dragons fan, you could probably describe the class as being 'chaotic-good'. They called the Dread Knight "the most arcane of the tank-type classes". He draws on the dark magic of 'Telon' in order to weild these arcane powers. Darrin noted one of the powers that the Dread Knight will have: an aura of fear. The aura creates an accumulating debuff on enemies in the radius of the Dread Knight. The speed by which it builds up depends on how close the enemy is to him, with the fastest accumulation on the foe that the Dread Knight is attacking. Darrin explained that as long as the enemy is in the effect area of the aura, the power of the debuff will increase. For instance, if the DK is ganged up on by 4 same-power enemies at one time, the last enemy that he faces will have the strongest debuff effect and be weakest.
These two classes sound extremely interesting, and I can't wait to try them out in the future.
