So there I was...tied up to the bedpost...
No wait, that's the wrong story...
Ok, so last night I was trying to do my specialization item for crafting. A weaponsmith I will be. I tried 3 times and every time I came up with mangled pieces in stead of a sword. I'm guessing it's requiring me to make an A grade item. It seemed impossible though. I could get close, but because of the complictions I kept getting, I just couldn't quite make it.
So I guess I need to grind some more work orders to gain some attribute points? Or perhaps hunt down some new crafting gear. Where abouts does one find better crafting gear on Kojan than the normal +1 or +2 starter stuff?

I got all by crafting gear and outfits from the broker. You really need it. At some point I just got stuck. I couldn't make anything 'moderate' anymore.
As far as the specialization item goes, I failed when I created a grade D item. But grade B or C were just fine.
(for a bit details read this thread.)

Hmm, not I. I could make it B grade every time and within a few percent of A, but everytime it gave me mangled pieces. Apparently B grade isn't good enough for weaponsmiths.
My biggest problem with the broker is, all the stuff on it has to come from somewhere. And if it comes from some where, then I should be able to go there and get some items too. And if I can go there to get the same items people are putting on the broker, where is it that I can go to get these items? That's the same issue with the diplomacy gear on the broker. Where are people getting these things that they put up?
Not that I'm against the broker, I just sometimes would rather buy it from a vendor or get it as a drop myself so that I know for sure I'm not over paying for something.
P.S. Phe, you're awesome. I should have just reread you As I Progress thread rather than starting this one...
Oh well, some day I'll get my act together.

You might just want to wait on that specialization quest, appears it is broken atm.

Great find, Tyrlien! That sucks for BP, but thanks so much for posted that.
And I fully agree with BP on the broker thing. As I was replying I was thinking the same thing. I do get some better quality tools when handing in good quality batch work-orders. I guess with turning in a lot of quality "A" batch work orders you can eventually get the items.
Also, at almost all crafting stations there are artisans handing out quests. Like the quest where I made some mystical leather strips for you. If you do all those quests you can collect quite some good gear. But you do need to know which of your friends can make what. There is one in Tawar Galan that gives a rather nice apron as reward.

To hook in on this one, check what this image says:
It does kinda hint that Parleys will get you clothes. Unless they're Soulbound, you have the option of selling them through the Broker. Now, my problem is different.
How the heck does one get from Diplomacy 50 (end of tutorial quests + story lines in any given city) to Diplomacy 100, which is the minimum I've found so far for Civic Diplomacy Parleys?
I love the Diplomacy stuff, especially the stories that go with it, but i always get stuck at this gap of 50 skill-levels.

Well, I'm at 63 now and it's pretty much just grinding parleys with the people you are able to parley with. You can try to find some quests to do, but I've only found about 3 that I could do at all. The rest of requirements that are a bit high.
As to turning it info for clothes, that's all well and good if you can find the dang information collectors. So far I've only found two. One in the diplomacy place in Ca'ial Brael, and one in Tawar Galan. The TG one takes blackmail info. I guess maybe I just need to grind some parleys for a while.

If it helps, Hathor Zhi has two informants as well.
One Blackmail, one Arcana. Conveniently situated on the slippery slope down into Hathor Zhi proper.
I don't seem to be getting any XP on the two Guards (diplomacy level 50) I can actually talk to. One of them is bugged so you win by playing a single card and the listening till the end. So maybe they disabled XP there. I dunno, reported the issue.
The next lowest diplomacy skill I've found is 75, which I can't quite match with my 53 :-s
I did manage to do one nifty Quest there That got me a +20 Soldier's Presence Shirt. Note Quest description says it's +13 but it's +20 :-)
This link goes to a listing of quests sorted by their Presence requirements. That might help you. As a Dark Elf I'm somewhat handicapped :-)

I've found that I can parley with and win against people that they're parleys say diplomacy level 125, so don't worry if your diplomacy level is too low still give it a shot. You might lose one or two, but once you get the strategy down for their parleys, you can usually grind the parley for a while to work up your skill.
There was one guy in Ca'ial Brael, had parleys at 100. When I was at 50 he would start out with about 6 points, and me at 13 or so. I could almost always win against him without him going lower than 4 or so. It seems that you can safely parely most people that have parleys about twice your current skill level, once you figure out their strategy and build a good one of your own to counter theirs.

Interesting. When I tried parleying with a Level 125 Guard, he said my Diplomacy skill needed to be at least 125. Boooo!!!!
Anyway, to make life a little easier on myself I decided to work out what to expect. Every race has a certain preference for an expression, and so does every Station type. I.e. A Thestrian Human Soldier will use Inspiration out of a sense of cultural inheritance and Demand because, well, he's a Soldier. It's not 100% foolproof and I have no idea what happens in case of say Inspire & Inspire, but I will know soon :-)
Type / Race | | Soldier | Nobles | Merchants | Outsiders* | Clergy | Academics | Crafters | | Preference | Demand | Flattery | Flattery | Flattery | Inspire | Reason | Reason | Thestran Human | Inspire | I / D | I / F | I / F | I / F | I / I | I / R | I / R | Dwarf | Demand | D / D | D / F | D / F | D / F | D / I | D / R | D / R | Halfling | Flattery | F / D | F / F | F / F | F / F | F / I | F / R | F / R | High Elf | Reason | R / D | R / F | R / F | R / F | R / I | R /R | R /R | Vulmane | Demand | D / D | D / F | D / F | D / F | D / I | D / R | D / R | Varanjar | Inspire | I / D | I / F | I / F | I / F | I / I | I / R | I / R | Lesser Giant | Inspire | I / D | I / F | I / F | I / F | I / I | I / R | I / R | | | | | | | | | | Kojani Human | Reason | R / D | R / F | R / F | R / F | R / I | R / R | R / R | Wood Elf | Demand | D / D | D / F | D / F | D / F | D / I | D / R | D / R | Half Elf | Flattery | F / D | F / F | F / F | F / F | F / I | F / R | F / R | Orc | Demand | D / D | D / F | D / F | D / F | D / I | D / R | D / R | Goblin | Reason | R / D | R / F | R / F | R / F | R / I | R / R | R / R | Raki | Flattery | F / D | F / F | F / F | F / F | F / I | F / R | F / R | | | | | | | | | | Qaliathari Human | Flattery | F / D | F / F | F / F | F / F | F / I | F / R | F / R | Gnome | Reason | R / D | R / F | R / F | R / F | R / I | R / R | R / R | Dark Elf | Inspire | I / D | I / F | I / F | I / F | I / I | I / R | I / R | Kurashasa | Flattery | F / D | F / F | F / F | F / F | F / I | F / R | F / R | Mordebi | Demand | D / D | D / F | D / F | D / F | D / I | D / R | D / R | Varanthari | Demand | D / D | D / F | D / F | D / F | D / I | D / R | D / R |

Grrrr, you mean I didn't HAVE to log out and jot it down from the New Character screen and a screenshot of the Civic Diplomacy Tutorial?
/Sigh
Btw, anyone know what the Secondary Expression from you Class choice does? Maybe I should check Vgtact.com first :-)

I hands you a few extra cards in that category. Your secondary expression is definately not as strong as your primary, but still better off than the remaining other two.
And I agree with BP that diplomacy level doesn't mean too much. I can't beat the 45 diplomacy scolars in Jalings, but I have no issue with some 75 and 100 folks in Ca'ial Brael. Most parley end in clear victory or loss.
I am kind of stuck like BP too at the moment. I could grind and grind and slowly get my dip points up, but it seems a bit meaningless. No matter how high my dip skill will be, without the right cards I still won't be able to beat previous unbeatable parleys.
But the vgtact.com quest list might bring the light. Although I think I am kind of doomed with Alora since I had made some very bad choices when I won some cards earlier on.

That's what I thought at first, but...
My Dark Elf (Inspire) Blood Mage (Flattery) has cards in order of amount:
Inspire > Demand > Reason > Flattery.
Even thoug several cards came to me through choices during the tutorial quests, (have you tried redoing them Alora?) this resulted in me having three Flattery cards rather than two. In fact, I'd be inclined to say my secondary Expression is Demand.

Yeah, I just checked and I can Parley with a Level 100, loosing from him does -8 to my Diplomacy Faction, whereas loosing from a L 50 does -2. Given that the L 50's hand me my head half the time (and I don't get XP from beating them) I'm stuck.

The grinding option seems rather pointless. If I have to go back and beat a L50 4 times to make up for loosing to a L100 who might or might not give me XP, then I'm not really happy with it. there seems to some kind of gap somewhere.

Well, I suggest you look into that option to redo the Diplomacy Tutorial first. Might give you a boost. Depending on how you look at it Dark Elf is the worst or best Diplomacy race. You need to be a fast talker not to get killed on sight after / during Parleys. Hmmmm. Bottle isn't better off in that regard.

I can redo all the tutorial quests, but I won't let me reselect the cards, I thought. I think I remember after making my blunder I tried to redo it. She would let me go through it again, but no xp/award at the end.

As always I was just wandering around. And yesterday I ended up in Leth Nurea. I think the High Elves are a bunch of arrogant snobs, but it was still not a bad place to visit. Although it felt liked being lulled into something I didn't want. Almost as bad as the in the gnomes cave.
But besides that I found a friendly girl (halfling or gnome, I think) selling some really cool stuff. I stocked up on birthday presents. There was also an extremely obnoxious High Elf, but he had a very interesting crafting goods gathering quest for me. As a reward he hands out a really spiffy shirt. I will be asking my fellow crafters in-game for some help on some of the items.
But the most profitable person I found was an arcana informer. Whenever I see an informer I try to click on them and see if by rumor and hearsay pieces result in something. So far I had received some rubish items. A lucky coin, a one time music tune. But this arcana informer must have really liked my gossip since she handed me a +9 academic presence belt! That was a very nice surprise.
Besides the fact I could kill fairies it seems Leth Nurea had more pleasant surprises.

I have good news for you Scary Fox-Demon Girl!
You don't have to put up with the snobby High Elf Informants to get that kind of item. It looks like a typical Tier one Civic Diplomacy reward.
Keep in mind any "Topic" (Arcana, Plots, Trends, e.t.c.) has a certain listing of his/her needs.
This is typically:
- Seven Hearsay
Generally gives you one shot items.
- Five Rumors
Gives you either one sot items or tier one permanent stuff (clothes, hand-held items)
- Three Evidence
Gives you permanent stuff.
The Belt was, I think, for 5 Rumor or 3 Evidence.
The Hearsay, Rumors and Evidence also come in quality layers (tiers). Judging by the item, you had Tier one. Same as me.
I don't know yet what the borders are of the tiers. I suspect Diplomacy Skill 100, 200, 300 and 400 and Tier items to be max bonus of +10, +20, +30 e.t.c.
I'm also not sure yet what th difference, if any, would be between handing in Arcana Hearsay at the Herrsay Informant or at the Arcana Informant.
Anyway, I should get Bottle back to Martok and the Bank there I guess. She has a huge wardrobe of T1 Civic rewards with 7 pairs of shoes for instance, what needs to be catalogued and shared out amongst her friends :-)
