What's your past MMO experience?

Here's another one of those touchy feely get-to-know-each-other threads. :)

Mine really started out with playing Diablo 1 online. The first real MMO-like game I ever played was called The 4th Coming. This was back around the early to mid 90's. Although I've never played Ultima Online, I would say it looks like that. I played that until they started charging people to play it. Then I moved on to Diablo 2 online which I played for something like 4 years. From there, I took quite a break and mostly played single player and console games up until the time Guild Wars came out. After about a year and a half of that I eventually moved on to play Lineage 2, CoH/V, WoW, and others as well as beta testing a handful of other MMOs.

And there you have it. My MMO experience in a nutshell.

EDIT: After reading Tyrlien's there it reminded me of something. The real first online game I played was a text only RPG called Usurper. It was a single player online game hosted by a local BBS. This was early 90's just before the internet started becoming popular. Ah, the good ol' days of measureing connection speed in baud...

EDIT x2: It seems Usurper was actually multiplayer, but I never made it into that part of the game, or the BBS I played on didn't offer the multiplayer functionality. Apparently it's a MUD. I never new what a MUD was before this...

I'm proud to say CoH was my first MMO, yep I'm a late bloomer. I'll be looking into other games in the near future.

I started playing games way back on the BBS's here, but for the life of me can't remember the names of them! (omg how long ago was that!?!)

My first "real" MMORPG was Ultima Online which I played for 7 years. Shadowbane was next, where I found Skara Brae. ;-) Loved that game... was very unhappy when they merged our Vengeance server with Mourning, although we did meet some wonderful people on Mourning. Then Everquest II now for coming up to two years in June I think, which is still my favorite. And now Vanguard. :-)

RE: What's your past MMO experience?

Hmmm I guess this one might raise the question what qualifies as an MMORPG. The first games I played were fairly simple text games on IBM dumb terninals in the mid to late 70's and they were multiplayer and some were RPG but very simple so not exactly massive. The 80's were a time of bbs gaming which by the late 80's had some game that were becoming massive in scope and even in some cases had multiple real time players; but by in large were turned based and ran a set # of days/turns then reset. The first online dedicated games I played were on Quantim Link service (the C=64 precurser to AOL), then once I moved on to the Amiga computer we started seeing some games that might arguably meet the definition of an MMORPG. Will all that said though the first undeniably MMORPG I played with UO, followed by a 2 year run with Shadowbane, then WOW, EQ2, SWG, and now Vanguard. I won't count Earth and Beyond that one barely kept me interested a month and I had another I played for the one free month then dropped which was also a sci fi type but could not keep anyones interest because by the 2nd week the game would have less than 100 on the server.

RE: What's your past MMO experience?

My first online gaming experience was a MUD, whose name I have completely forgotten. But it was rather short lived anyway. My next online experience got me hooked a lot longer, almost a year, I think. It was a 'game' called The Stone. It was not an RPG, but it was online and had a fantastic community.

My first real MMORPG was Dark Age of Camelot. Played that for about a year before I switched to Anarchy Online. Wonderful wonderful game, but after two years I had seen it all, and started trying out a few games like Ryzom and Horizons. Nothing really fancied me till I picked up City of Heroes. It was instant joy. Especially when I discovered GameAmp. I am playing it for 2 years now, and I haven't cancelled my subscription yet. I have tried a few other games (Lineage2, RF-Online, Guildwars, D&D Online) but COH kept me hooked until Vanguard came out.

These days Vanguard makes it very hard for me to find time to play anything else. Have I told you guys yet, how much I love this game and the people in it?
