RE: What class should i start with?

Hi Deathor6, welcome to the GameAmp forums.

As you can imagine a lot of that decision depends on what you like and how experienced you are. But what I think if one of the best classes to start with in a new game is the Paladin. You have good defenses, some healing skills and nice damage output. You will be able to go on your own and kick butt.

If you rather support others then a cleric or shaman might be better. And if you just care about your own skin and just want to kill, kill, kill you might want to try the sorcerer.

But I think you better start off with a paladin.

For a bit more reading on the various classes check our class section

Hi Deathor6 and Welcome to the GameAmp Vanguard section and yes another vote for the Paladins. :) It really is a nice class to start with and is quite forgiving while you learn the ins and outs of a game. :)

RE: What class should i start with?

I'm playing a Raki sorceress and Goblin necromancer, and they both work great for me. The sorceress can kill pretty much everything really quick, even some groups. Her ranged spells make it easy to drag out one and one enemy, so as long as you keep an eye on those pesky lizards hiding in the grass, you won't have too many problems at first.

The necromancer on the other hand is far weaker than the sorceress, but she gets an Abomination at level 2 that helps out a lot. Just keep in mind there seems to be a bug that force you to click "Always assist" every time you create one, or else it will not do anything. The necromancer also gets a Drain Life spell early, allowing you to transfer hitpoints from the enemies to yourself, healing you and damaging them at the same time. That's always handy. :) You can even (in theory, hardly ever works though) tell the Abomination to attack the enemy with a special taunt attack, forcing the enemy to attack the abomination instead of you. If the abomination dies, just create a new one.

I've tried the paladin as well, but it really didn't do it for me. Sure she has great armor and decent healing, but to compensate, she didn't have much attack power at all. Maybe I was just playing her wrong, though. Just felt like she was invincible, but couldn't deal much damage at all. Great in groups, not much use in solo.

Blood mage? Excellent healing capabilities, but for some reason not much damage potential. A decent group class, rather useless in solo. (to my experience, at least).

If I were to give up a tip, I'd say necromancer or sorceress in that order. But that's just me.

He he he. The only way you can describe the Blood Mage's damage potential as lacking is when viewed from the true DPS caster classes. And even then it should be noted that the only class besides Rogue that comes near to a sorcerer or Druid is Blood Mage.

No, seriously. Blood Mage is the second best solo class for a reason. The Necromancer is the ideal soloer for now due to the Pet taking all the blows and generally being out of whack balance wise, but the Blood Mage's health drains (enemy's health => Blood Mage) make it a very cool class.

And when you hit 15 you can rip the still beating heart out of your enemy, or his quivering brains. :-)

RE: What class should i start with?

I started my career of as a Monk till I reached level 10 and decided to make an alt. A sorceress. I fell in love instantly. She was so much more powerful I felt invincible. I really loved the class. The weak armor gets nicely compensated by devastating damage. The enemy is dead before it reaches you. Nothing can be better than my sorceress, I thought.

But by the time she reached 20 I had a really hard time solo-ing. I could take out a single target, but as soon as I got two or three mobs on me I was dead. The sorcerer is still a great class, and beloved in every team, but not such a great solo player in my mind.

Edit: wow, my post sounded way too much like an argument. Which was not my intention. I think it is great you posted your experiences so far NorseDude. I love to read how other players enjoy their game and classes. I just got a bit stuck solo on my sorceress wanted to give a warning. Currently I am playing a lost woodelf ranger, and she is great. The extra armor is really keeping me alive. If it gets too hairy now, I can run away. But that doesn't happen too often since both melee and ranged attacks are wonderfully powerful.

Of course it helps a lot I have a very skilled cleric by my side most of the time :)

RE: What class should i start with?

Hmpf. So both my excellent sorceress and necromancer will be useless in a while, and the blood mage will rise and shine in a while? Don't blame me for ignorance, I've only reached level 12 or so with the sorc, 10 with the necro and, um... level 4 with the bloodmage. (although I checked the skill list down to level 10, and didn't find any damage spells at all other than the one you start with?) :)

So let me ask your humble opinion. I like spellcasters, I like useful pets (unlike the hunter pets in WoW that always run off unless you feed them every five minutes), I like some variation in apperance (armor come in handy), and perhaps a weapon or two.

Race wise, I like the newbies and underdogs. I wrote a few fantasy novels with humanoid foxes, pretty much identical to the Raki. (this was more than ten years ago, so they are not based on them in any way). The goblins are cute on a disturbing way, and I've ahd a thing for Drow ever since reading The Dark Elf Trilogy (R.A. Salvatore, Forgotten Realms, all that). I've also not had a thing for elves since the arrogant elves in Dragonlance.

As for groups, I like a combination. Groups are fine at times, but I also like wandering off on my own at times as well. Besides, I don't think there's much point in a regular group if you are going to be a crafter or diplomat either, and I plan on becoming a master in everything. Vanguard is worth the time and effort. :)

So, what race and class would you recommend I play? I've thought about a Ranger barbarian with two swords, but she seems a bit weak in melee combat. I enjoy the casual ranged combat as well, but don't want to depend on it.

RE: What class should i start with?

Especially since you are in no hurry to get to the highest levels I think you should not worry too much about which class is 'better'. Every class has its pros and cons and you should just play what you like best. Besides, my opinion is just my opinion. And I can only comment about the classes I have played.

The main reason my first serious character was a sorceror was because I think light armor looks the best. I have now seen some very spiffy medium armor outfits too. Heavy armor just looks too heavy for me. Another advantage of light armor is that it goes well with a tailor. And as tailor you can make harvesting and diplomatic clothes as well. The tailor is probably the most fun crafting profession. But the lack of armor is a drawback.

So I started over as a woodelf ranger. I love the ranger. I am mostly a dual sword melee fighter. I have very powerful arrrow attacks as well, but you can only use them for long range. Especially when solo-ing they are only used as opening shots. Now at level 20 I have a small heal and a temporary pet to make life even easier. Since I can't play a healer for me it is probably the ideal class. What are the alternatives? A monk, a rogue or a bard. Wow, I am trying to say something why you should pick the ranger, but I can't really. I have teamed quite a bit with all three and they are great as well!

But if you want a great pet, do decent damage, look great, you might to try a shaman. I love teaming with shamans. To me their only drawback is that they can heal.

Hmm, my post is becoming a bit of a rambling. I guess the bottom line is you will probably enjoy every class except the three tank classes. And I think I better leave it with that.

RE: What class should i start with?

Thanks. I've tried a ranger with a crossbow, and she works quite well right now. On early levels (I'm lvl 4), the crossbow takes out pretty much anything with two shots. If something survive, the sword will finish the job.

I'll try the shaman a bit as well, and perhaps the blood mage. I like the idea of ripping out someone's still beating heart, boiling someone's blood and all that, although I can't really see a "nice" class like raki or elves do it. I'm thinking more of goblins, drow, that stuff.

BTW my sorceress was an outfitter for one reason. She doesn't even bother bring a weapon, so why on earth would she bother chop down trees or mine rocks? Outfitting seemed more like her style. Teaching her lumberjacking would be like trying to teach a goblin necromancer diplomacy. Sure it might technically work, but think about it. It's not just a goblin, but a goblin necromancer. lol.

RE: What class should i start with?

so I have to wonder, why has no one suggested druids? they have a couple of entrappment spells wich stop the enemy from even getting close to you while also dealing damage, then you can cast spells that deal huge ammounts of damage all without using up even half of your mana.
I love my druid, but then again I also like my blood mage, maybe I just like the off classes
