Yesterday made me realize once again why I left the safety of my home town and went in search for fame and adventure in the wonderful and mysterious world of Telon.
It started off on a high note when my good friend, the beautiful lady Kettle, told me to visit the post office in Halgarad where great news would be waiting for me. I had camped the night before at one of the mountain cabins in the mountain range to the north. And although I had actually never been in the area before I managed to find a safe way down the mountain into the village of the giants and to the local mailbox. And the letter I found had great news indeed! It was proof of ownership for a sloop one of our guild members had built and docked at Lake Halgarad. I rushed to the lake to jump into my very own sloop! But of course the harbour master stopped me. He wanted me to fill in some paperwork including a name for the sloop.
I didn't want to think of names! I wanted to sail! So in rush of the moment I named it Hyacinth. The name of the boy I had my first crush on now many years ago. I wonder how he is doing? Will he still be in Cai'al Brael? I do miss him...
The harbour master gave me a weird look and almost had to stuff the papers back in my hand. Which brought me back to Lake Halgarad and what is now officially MY sloop. So I jumped on board and stood behind the wheel. And then I realized I know absolutely nothing about sailing! I grew up in trees, not on water. For half an hour I was just standing there utterly lost. But eventually I figured it out. And I made my first tour around the lake. I don't know if any of you have been to Lake Halgarad, but it you have you know there is not much sailing you can do there. After 15 minutes I had seen and sailed about every inch of the lake. So it was time to move on.
Although I had the urge to start sailing the seven seas, I also knew I had some actual work waiting. For the last week I had been hunting down the witch doctors at the strand of the ancient. These vile creatures and their henchmen have three talismans they had stolen from the unicorns. I was asked to retrieve them. But despite all my efforts I had only managed to get one of the three. It was getting rather discouraging, but I was in high spirits because of my sloop so I returned to Qalia. And while I was hiding in the grass (and reaping some firegrass bales in the progress) I saw their leader step out of his hut. All by himself! I couldn't believe my luck. I knew I could handle him alone. So I lunched an arrow right in his chest.
Of course it was a bit too much wishful thinking to expect him to drop down instantly. But I didn't expect he managed to call that many henchmen! Four of them came running towards me. In the past even only two had been nearly too much, but I couldn't let this leader get away since he must for sure have one of the talismans. So I pulled out all stops and applied every single ranger trick I had learned. And until this moment I am not really sure how I did it, but all four of them lay dead and I was still standing. I had done it!!
And as expected the leader did indeed have the second talisman. So now only the third one to go. Everybody knows that bad guys are not very trusting, so I assumed the third talisman would probably be in the leaders hut as well. I was welcomed there by two witch doctors. Two days ago I would have run off, but with my new confidence I took them head on and defeated them without much trouble. And my assumption was correct. One of them had the third talisman. I could finally leave the strand behind me and return to the unicorn.
He was of course as pleased as I was with my success, but he had another task planned for me. And the gods must have really been smiling on me since I couldn't have been able to do what he asked of me a day earlier. He asked me to take the talisman to a lost unicorn on an island far far to the west. I could have hugged him! Now I could set sail, explore new worlds and at the same time help out the unicorns. Life is grant. And what a journey it was! The coast of Qalia is filled with splendour and danger. There was so much beauty and so many creatures that would have swallowed me whole if I would have been swimming. I wish you could all have seen the things I have seen that afternoon.
But the day was ending, and as the sun was setting I reached the far west island. I climbed the mountain slope in the last rays of light. When I reached the top the lost unicorn was there waiting for me. I handed him the talisman and collapsed from exhaustion. What a day!
